Fair, fairness
Faith, faithful, faithfulness
- The English word "faith" comes via the Old French feid from Latin
fides (related to fido) which meant "trust", "reliance", "confidence",
and so on. But, the New Testament manuscripts are written in Greek. When English
translations have "faith", the Greek text had for the most part pistis
which in old Greek meant "trust in others", "persuasion of a thing", "confidence",
"assurance", and also "trustworthiness", "faithfulness", "honesty" and so on.
For more on this important matter, see the essay
eb10b.htm.
- What does the word "faith" really mean? What is "true faith"? →
eb10b.htm
- On the meaning of the word pistis which often is translated as "faith".
→
eb10b.htm
- Is having faith the same as "believing that God exists"? →
eb10b.htm
- Abraham, Jacob and Job, and their faith. →
eb10b.htm
- Paul's example of faith, which he told others to imitate. →
em03c.htm
- What did Paul really mean by the word "faith"? →

- Churches and preachers produce statements of faith, doctrines, dogmas and
tenets, and claim them to be "the Truth". But who has the "true faith" or "correct
dogmas"? →
es08c.htm
- The saints' faith had very little do with what the word "faith" means in
the religious language of our day. →
eb10b.htm
- Romans 3:31, "Do we, then, make law useless through faith? Not by means;
rather, we are establishing law". →
eo11b.htm
- Paul to the saints in Corinth: "I do not mean that we are to dictate to
you with regard to your faith; on the contrary, we work with you for your true
happiness; indeed, it is through your faith that you are standing firm" (2 Corinthians
1:24). →
ea06c.htm –
ea13b.htm
- Galatians 2:16, "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law but by faith in Jesus the Anointed". →
eo11b.htm
- Paul to the saints in Galatia: "This is the only thing I want to find out
from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing
with faith?" (Galatians 3:2). →
ec10c.htm
- Galatians 3:23-25, "Before the Faith came we were perpetual prisoners under
the Law, in preparation for the destined faith about to be revealed. So the
Law has been our tutor-slave our pedagogue to lead us to Christ, so that we
may be justified by faith; but now that the Faith is come, we are no longer
under a tutor-slave." →
eo11b.htm
- 1 Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all these evils; which
some having aspired after, have wandered from the faith". →
em08c.htm –
ea15c.htm

these withstand the truth, men having been corrupted in mind, found worthless
as to the faith". →
ea15c.htm
- Titus 3:8, "On this I want you to firmly insist; that those who have faith
in God must be careful to maintain honest occupations". →

- On the misleading translation "the profession of our faith" in Hebrews 10:23.
→
eb10b.htm
- Hebrews 11:13, "All these died in faith, without receiving the promises,
but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed
that they were strangers and exiles on the earth". →
eb05b.htm
- James 2:14-17, "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has
faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is
naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Depart in peace,
be warmed and filled', but you do not give them the things which are needed
for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not
have works, is dead." →

only". →

Fall, fallen, falling, fell
- On the euphemism "fallen asleep"
- Several New Testament passages talk about death as "falling asleep";
for instance Acts 7:60 says that Stephen "fell asleep" (ekoimêthê,
a form of the verb koimaô). (Similar passages: 1 Corinthians 11:30,
15:6, 15:18, 15:20 and 15:51, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14-15, Matthew 27:52,
John 11:11-14, 2 Peter 3:4.) But, that was merely an euphemistic expression
in the Greek language, referring to death. →

it was always the farmer who set aside the tithe, not the consumer. →

Fidelity
- The 1769 KJ version has the word "fidelity" in Titus 2:10. That is copied
from the Vulgate which has fidem in that verse.
- The Latin word fidem (fides) meant, on the one hand, "trust",
"confidence", "reliance", and, on the other hand, "trustworthiness", "faithfulness",
"conscientiousness", "credibility", "honesty", "truth".
- The Greek word in question (Titus 2:10) is pistis which meant,
on the one hand, "trust", "confidence", "assurance" ("faith"), and, on the
other hand, "trustworthiness", "faithfulness", "honesty".
- The essay
eb10b.htm explains what the word "faith" (Greek, pistis) really
means and refers to, in the Bible.

Finland, Finnish, Finns
Fire
- The continually burning, light-giving fire in the menowrah in the
temple was produced by burning olive oil. There were no candles in the temple;
oil lamps were used. Many bible-versions contain such words as "candles"
or "candlesticks", but that is an error. The menowrah in the temple was
in actual fact a lamp-stand where pure olive oil flowed through ducts into seven
fires. – Look also under the headings "Menorah",

lamps, lampstand, lampstands" and "Olive,
olives, olive oil".

the foundation of God's spiritual dwelling? →

ex02c.htm
- To begin with, the agreement made at Sinai (the Old Covenant) had a system
where firstfruits and firstborn ones were to be given to the Lord
(Exodus 13:2, et cetera). But, the first-fruits were replaced by the Levites
and the tithe system which meant that the Levites came to share a certain part
of the "tithe", which was a tenth part of the agricultural produce of the Promised

Firstling, firstlings
- Originally, the Israelites were to give their "firstlings" (peter
or pitrah, Exodus 13:12-15) to the Lord and to his service. That referred
to the first-born ones of both humans and cattle. But, that arrangement was
soon replaced by the Levite system; see Numbers 1:47-53, 3:6-12, 3:41-45, 8:16-18
and 18:6. The tribe of Levi received only a limited amount of agricultural land
(only small parcels around cities), and were because of that to a certain part
supported by the other tribes of Israel, through the tithe-system. For more
on the tithe, which was only on the agricultural produce of the land of Israel,
see the essay
em01d.htm.

If you find any of the essays or treatises at this site interesting
and helpful, please provide a copy to other people as well. But before printing
or distributing anything, make sure to get the very latest version, exactly as it
is, directly from this web site. In regard to printable copies of these pages, for
example as PDF-format papers, booklets or brochures or so – there are no specially
printer friendly variants (except some
bible puzzles), nor is there a need for that – simply, when you print an essay,
set the margins and the text size to fit your needs and the paper you use, in the
program you use for viewing these pages, and then send it to your printer. (This
varies in different browsers and word processing programs. In web browsers, for
setting the margin size and headers and footers, look for "Print Format" in the
File menu; to set the text size for print-out, look under "Preview" or "View" in
the same menu.)
Important: You are welcome to quote the documents at this site
– the Bible Pages – provided that you mention the source, by giving the full web
address to the page in question. Please link to these essays and give copies to
friends. However, you may not re-publish any part of the contents of this
site, as a booklet, brochure or on the Internet or in other ways, without a permission
from the author; he retains the copyright. For more on copying and quoting, and
a few words about the author and his religious education and credentials, see the
page
purpose.htm.
The essays at this site are not in "bible lesson" or "bible study course"
format, nor are they meant as on-line "bible study classes" of some kind. Even though
this site gives ready answers to biblical questions of many kinds, its main goal
is providing food for thought on a variety of biblical subjects, and challenging
and encouraging people to get started with deep personal bible study and
then continue with that. (Many religious organisations and denominations have their
bible lessons and correspondence courses; they are ready-made "studies" which are
shrewdly constructed and written in such a manner that they lead the reader to conclusions
that fit the dogmas of the group in question.) A careful, closer study of the books
of the Bible with proper tools will help a believer to gain better and deeper biblical
understanding. In that way, one will find out more about what the Bible really says,
means and teaches. One can then, with wisdom, use that knowledge as a guide for
one's life, instead of accepting as "biblical truths" whatever commercial religion
– churches and their ministers (preachers) – have taught and want people to believe.
A more thorough, bible-based study with care and with thought will,
not only help one to learn more, but also show one how many a popular belief has
no scriptural basis or support but is altogether false and not biblical at all.
This applies, not only to prophecy and "end time" related things, but also to many
other subjects where prevailing dogmas are often taken "for granted". For this reason,
it is extremely important for believers to personally study the Writings, and to
thoroughly analyse them down to the smaller details, in order to find out the real
facts. For doing that, it is not necessary to know the Hebrew, Greek or Latin languages
(even though learning their letters and alphabet can be a good idea); there are
modern, advanced tools which can help one to study in an effective way – see the
pages
es01d.htm and
es02c.htm for more on this. The essay
eg02c.htm supplies a number of easy, elementary keys to acquiring a better and
deeper understanding of the Bible, simply by consciously and methodically avoiding
certain usual errors and pitfalls.
This site is non-denominational and non-sectarian. It is not connected
to any church, sect or religious organisation or movement. This site looks at things
from a biblical perspective, and not from a dogmatic one. It does not claim to be
without error or to "know it all" or to have a perfect or complete explanation to
all things – it consists of an ongoing bible study that has been made public, and
as the study goes on, the contents of these pages are revised and also expanded,
with new topics and themes being addressed. Readers are invited and welcome to write
to the author with thoughts and comments, or to ask questions or to point out a
mistake if they feel that they have found one. For more on this, see the page
purpose.htm.
