A key-word search index to the contents of this site, entries that
begin with the letter R, section R to Renewing. (The other sections
under R are
Repent
to Revelations,
Revenge
to Rituals and
River
to RWBS.)
(Previous section:
Qadesh
to Quoting.) (Index
overview.)
R
- The Greek letter rho – where the essays at this site contain Greek
words, the letter rho (Ρ, ρ) is transcribed into a plain
r, for the most part without adding a h to show the aspiration.
(Sometimes, modern-day Greek letters may be used.)
Raamses – look below, under the heading "Rameses".
Rabbi, rabbis, rabbinic, rabbinical
- The scribes and the Pharisees wanted to be called "Rabbi" (Matthew 23:7).
(The word rabbi meant something like "my great one"). But, Jesus forbade
his disciples to use such titles (Matthew 23:8). However, it was right and proper
to use that title of Jesus.
- On the title "Rabbi". →

and "Israel".
- For more, see the other parts of this multi-page index, or use the

Rainbow, rainbows
- The rainbow is mentioned in the Bible, in Genesis 9:13 – but in our day,
the rainbow is commonly used as a (secret) symbol for the sun-god (Mithra, et
cetera). In many churches, one can find pictures of "Jesus" sitting on a rainbow,
but that is an ancient motive which refers to the sun-god Mithra (Sol Mithras
Deus Invictus). → (ew04d.htm)

Ram, ram's horn
- The English word "jubilee" comes from the Hebrew yowbel which is
thought to have meant "a ram's horn" (used as a horn to blow in, like a trumpet
of a kind). →

Rameses (Genesis 47:11, Exodus 1:11 and 12:37, Numbers 33:3 and 33:5)
- The Bible shows that it was only 45 days after their departure from Rameses
(Goshen), that the Israelites reached the wilderness of Sinai. Consequently
– where was Sinai really located? →

Rank, ranks
- The word "rank" occurs 10 times in the 1769 KJ version:
- In Genesis 41:5 and 7 as a translation of the Hebrew bariy which
meant "fat", "plentiful". (The English word "rank" has even that meaning,
"luxuriantly or excessively vigorous in growth".)
- In Numbers 2:16 and 24, as an added word, without any corresponding
word in the Hebrew text.
- In 1 Kings 7:4 and 5, where the Hebrew text refers to rows or tiers
(of windows).
- In 1 Chronicles 12:33 and 38, as a "translation" of the verb adar.
The Hebrew text refers to men who were able to wage war.
- In Joel 2:7, as a "translation" of the Hebrew word orach which
meant "way", "path".
- In Mark 6:40, as a "translation" of the Greek wording prasiai prasiai.
(Literally, the word prasia referered to "a bed of leeks", prason,
and generally to "a garden-plot". Apparently, the phrase kai anepeson
prasiai prasiai in Mark 6:40 meant "and they sat down in groups".)
- The Catholic Church has a hierarchy with ranks. Many other churches have
copied that. But, does the New Testament talk about "ranks" among the saints?
- Elders – what was their role in the saints' assemblies? Also: Was there
"a hierarchy" with "ranks"? →

- In the Greek text of the New Testament, the words episkopos,

elders. →

- The word euangelistês (ευαγγελιστης, "evangelist") was not a
"title", and being gifted to proclaim the Good Message was not a "rank".
Instead, being an euangelistês was a spiritual gift. It was the same
with being a prophêtês ("prophet"). →

meaning supposedly is that people should give money to the preacher. But, that
is not what Paul was talking about. →

Receive, received, receiving
- "It is more blessed to give than to receive". The important thing is to
know what it really was that the apostle Paul meant when he reminded the elders
from Ephesus about those words of Jesus. The context, Acts 20:17-38, shows that
Paul told those elders to be on the giving side, just as Paul had been. →

Religion, religions, religious
- Etymology: The English word "religion" comes from the Latin noun religio
which referred to "respect for what is sacred", "reverence for the gods" – in
old Rome, that referred to the Roman idol system, of course.
- The origin of the Latin noun religio is not fully clear. It is
said that Cicero thought it was derived from relegare (relego),
in the meaning "to go over again", "to rehearse", "to repeat" (perhaps the
idiom was, the same ritual over and over again – as it was in the Roman
idol religion). Some, on the other hand, have suggested that the Latin word
religio came from religare (religo), "to bind fast"
– possibly a Catholic invention, for the Catholic Church certainly has "bound"
countless things (producing dogmas,et cetera).
- In the 1769 KJ version, the words "religion" and "religious" are found in
these six passages:
- In Galatians 1:13 and 14, as a "translation" of Ioudaismos, which
is better translated as "Judaism".
- In Acts 13:43, "religious proselytes", as a "translation" of the Greek
phrase sebomenôn prosêlutôn which referred to non-Jews who had turned
to Judaism.
- In Acts 26:5 and James 1:26 and 27, as a translation of thrêskeia
and thrêskos, perhaps better translated as "worship" or "devotion".
(A note: In Colossians 2:18, the 1769 KJ version renderes thrêskeia tôn
angelôn as "worshipping of angels".)

If you find any of the essays or treatises at this site interesting
and helpful, please provide a copy to other people as well. But before printing
or distributing anything, make sure to get the very latest version, exactly as it
is, directly from this web site. In regard to printable copies of these pages, for
example as PDF-format papers, booklets or brochures or so – there are no specially
printer friendly variants (except some
bible puzzles), nor is there a need for that – simply, when you print an essay,
set the margins and the text size to fit your needs and the paper you use, in the
program you use for viewing these pages, and then send it to your printer. (This
varies in different browsers and word processing programs. In web browsers, for
setting the margin size and headers and footers, look for "Print Format" in the
File menu; to set the text size for print-out, look under "Preview" or "View" in
the same menu.)
Important: You are welcome to quote the documents at this site
– the Bible Pages – provided that you mention the source, by giving the full web
address to the page in question. Please link to these essays and give copies to
friends. However, you may not re-publish any part of the contents of this
site, as a booklet, brochure or on the Internet or in other ways, without a permission
from the author; he retains the copyright. For more on copying and quoting, and
a few words about the author and his religious education and credentials, see the
page
purpose.htm.
The essays at this site are not in "bible lesson" or "bible study course"
format, nor are they meant as on-line "bible study classes" of some kind. Even though
this site gives ready answers to biblical questions of many kinds, its main goal
is providing food for thought on a variety of biblical subjects, and challenging
and encouraging people to get started with deep personal bible study and
then continue with that. (Many religious organisations and denominations have their
bible lessons and correspondence courses; they are ready-made "studies" which are
shrewdly constructed and written in such a manner that they lead the reader to conclusions
that fit the dogmas of the group in question.) A careful, closer study of the books
of the Bible with proper tools will help a believer to gain better and deeper biblical
understanding. In that way, one will find out more about what the Bible really says,
means and teaches. One can then, with wisdom, use that knowledge as a guide for
one's life, instead of accepting as "biblical truths" whatever commercial religion
– churches and their ministers (preachers) – have taught and want people to believe.
A more thorough, bible-based study with care and with thought will,
not only help one to learn more, but also show one how many a popular belief has
no scriptural basis or support but is altogether false and not biblical at all.
This applies, not only to prophecy and "end time" related things, but also to many
other subjects where prevailing dogmas are often taken "for granted". For this reason,
it is extremely important for believers to personally study the Writings, and to
thoroughly analyse them down to the smaller details, in order to find out the real
facts. For doing that, it is not necessary to know the Hebrew, Greek or Latin languages
(even though learning their letters and alphabet can be a good idea); there are
modern, advanced tools which can help one to study in an effective way – see the
pages
es01d.htm and
es02c.htm for more on this. The essay
eg02c.htm supplies a number of easy, elementary keys to acquiring a better and
deeper understanding of the Bible, simply by consciously and methodically avoiding
certain usual errors and pitfalls.
This site is non-denominational and non-sectarian. It is not connected
to any church, sect or religious organisation or movement. This site looks at things
from a biblical perspective, and not from a dogmatic one. It does not claim to be
without error or to "know it all" or to have a perfect or complete explanation to
all things – it consists of an ongoing bible study that has been made public, and
as the study goes on, the contents of these pages are revised and also expanded,
with new topics and themes being addressed. Readers are invited and welcome to write
to the author with thoughts and comments, or to ask questions or to point out a
mistake if they feel that they have found one. For more on this, see the page
purpose.htm.
