Slave, slaves, slavery
- A note: In the Bible the words "bond" and "bondage" often refer to slavery,
or to imprisonment – but not always. Also marriage is sometimes called "a bond"
– nothing negative in that – the logic probably being that the husband and the
wife are bound to each other, through their marriage covenant. Bible-translators
have at times failed to discern that certain related passages with the word
"bound" refer to the marriage bond and not to slavery. The essay
eo16b.htm considers some such passages.
- Deuteronomy 5:15, "And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land
of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and
by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to observe
the sabbath day". →

Sleep, sleeping, slept
- Several NT passages talk about death as "falling asleep"; for instance Acts
7:60 says that Stephen "fell asleep" (Greek ekoimêthê, a form of the
verb koimaô) – but that was merely an euphemistic expression in the Greek
language which referred to death. (Similar passages: 1 Corinthians 11:30, 15:6,
15:18, 15:20 and 15:51, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14-15, Matthew 27:52, John 11:11-14,
2 Peter 3:4.) →

Smyrna (Smurna, Zmurna)
- Smyrna (Greek, Smurna) was a coastal town in what today is the western
part of Asiatic Turkey. The word smurna meant "myrrh".
- The city-name Smurna occurs 1 time in the New Testament, in Revelation
1:11. The adjective-form smurnaios occurs 1 time, in Revelation 2:8.
- The word smurna occurs also in Matthew 2:11 and John 19:39, in the
meaning "myrrh". Mark 15:23 contains the verb-form smurnizô.
- In Revelation 2:8, the words tô angelô tês ekklêsias smurnaiôn are
to be interpreted literally, "the messenger of the assembly in Smyrna". Not
"angel", but simply "messenger" which is what the word angelos (αγγελος)
literally meant. In other words, those words in Revelation 2:8 obviously refer
to some person (courier) who transported the words of the Lord in a letter written
down by the apostle John, to the saints and believers in the town Smyrna.
→ See the
footnote in the essay
ea03d.htm.
- Some talk about "church eras", and call one of them "the Smyrna era". Apparently,
the "church eras" dogma was invented by the American Freemason and Baptist preacher
William Miller (1782-1849). For more on this, see the essay

Sodom, Sodoma, sodomite, sodomites, sodomy
- On one occasion, Abraham freed the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, from
the warlords who had captured them. That story is found in Genesis 14:8-24.
It was after Abraham and his men had saved the people of Sodom, that "Melchizedek
the king of Salem brought forth bread and wine" (verse 18).
- The destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, along with a number
of others, is recorded in Genesis 19:24-28.
- The word "sodomy" is not found in the Bible.
- A note: Do not misunderstand this. The Bible condemns all kinds of sexual
immorality. This statement simply means what it says: The word "sodomy"
is not found in the Bible. Regarding the word "sodomite", see the next point.
- The word "sodomite" was introduced in the 1560 Geneva bible, in 1 Kings
14:24, 15:12 and 22:46 and 2 Kings 23:7; in 1611 the makers of the KJ version
(1611) put that word even to Deuteronomy 23:17. But, those verses do not refer
to Sodom. It is not correct to put the word "sodomite" in those passages; the
Hebrew word in question is qadesh which has no connection with Sodom.
- Despite preconceived ideas, the facts are that the Bible does not tell
us the exact nature of the wickedness of the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah
and the other cities in the area that was destroyed. Read on, for more.
- Genesis 18:20 tells us that their sin was "very grievous" – but again, the
nature of their wickedness is not stated.
- We do know that the inhabitants of Sodom wanted to rape the angels
whom the Lord had sent there, but, that is the only mention of such things
in connection with Sodom. The cry regarding their wickedness had gone out
before that. See Genesis 18:20-21 – again, that passage simply does not
tell us what kind of wickedness the "cry of their sin" referred to. Also:
The Bible does not say that the inhabitants of Sodom normally were
homosexuals. Genesis 18:20 says that their sin was "very grievous" – but
again, what the nature of their wickedness really was, is not stated. It
could even be that they were so wicked that they wanted to rape those messengers,
merely for the reason that they knew that they Lord had sent them
– that is, it could be that they wanted to "point a finger at God" and express
their hate against him, through such an incredibly heinous act. But, they
were destroyed.
- Again, the Bible condemns all kinds of sexual immorality, but the Scriptures
do not say that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for that particular
reason.
- In short: The Bible does not tell us the exact reason for the destruction
of those cities. Compare with the reason why the Lord caused the Flood to
destroy the inhabitants of the Earth – see Genesis 6:1-7 (read all of that
passage, with care). See also the essay
ew11c.htm which is about a certain wicked group who will be destroyed
in a similar way.

- Regarding the bible-book called the Song of Solomon, look below, under the
heading "Song",

Soul, souls
- Regarding the origin of the English word "soul" – etymology-lexicons give
only dubious explanations, if any. But, some note that the word "soul" (Middle
English soule, Old English sawol) is related to the Middle-Dutch
siele and the Swedish själ. And then, it might be worth noting
that while the Swedish word själ is translated as "soul", the word
själv means "self".
- In numerous bible-passages where English bible-translators have put in the
word "soul", the meaning is "a person", "an individual"; in some other passages,
the meaning is more like "life", "mind", or similar. More:
- What bible-translators have rendered as "soul", is often the Hebrew nephesh
or the Greek psuchê. Those words had a wide usage with many different
meanings.
- The 1769 KJ version translates nephesh in various ways, such
as "soul", "life", "person", "mind", "heart", "creature", "body", "himself",
"yourselves", "dead", "will", "desire", "man", "themselves", "any" and "appetite",
and psuchê as "soul", "life", "mind" and "heart".
- Nephesh occurs 753 times in the OT. It meant such things
as "breath", "life", "mind", "person", "being", et cetera.
- A note: KJV-1769 never translates the Hebrew noun nephesh
as "spirit" or "ghost", except in Job 11:20 and Jeremiah 15:9 where
it talks about "giving up the ghost". (Some versions note in the margin
of Job 11:20, "or, a puff of breath"; some others make it to a "sigh",
and so on. In the case of Jeremiah 15:9, there are numerous different
interpretations – guesses – as to what the Hebrew wording might have
meant, such as "breathe her last", "gasps for breath", "her breathing
is laboured", and so on.)
- Humans do not have any "immortal soul". They are mortal and do not have
everlasting life in themselves; that is something they must be given by God.
The talk about an "immortal souls" is an unbiblical dogma of Catholic origin.

If you find any of the essays or treatises at this site interesting
and helpful, please provide a copy to other people as well. But before printing
or distributing anything, make sure to get the very latest version, exactly as it
is, directly from this web site. In regard to printable copies of these pages, for
example as PDF-format papers, booklets or brochures or so – there are no specially
printer friendly variants (except some
bible puzzles), nor is there a need for that – simply, when you print an essay,
set the margins and the text size to fit your needs and the paper you use, in the
program you use for viewing these pages, and then send it to your printer. (This
varies in different browsers and word processing programs. In web browsers, for
setting the margin size and headers and footers, look for "Print Format" in the
File menu; to set the text size for print-out, look under "Preview" or "View" in
the same menu.)
Important: You are welcome to quote the documents at this site
– the Bible Pages – provided that you mention the source, by giving the full web
address to the page in question. Please link to these essays and give copies to
friends. However, you may not re-publish any part of the contents of this

a few words about the author and his religious education and credentials, see the
page
purpose.htm.
The essays at this site are not in "bible lesson" or "bible study course"
format, nor are they meant as on-line "bible study classes" of some kind. Even though
this site gives ready answers to biblical questions of many kinds, its main goal
is providing food for thought on a variety of biblical subjects, and challenging
and encouraging people to get started with deep personal bible study and
then continue with that. (Many religious organisations and denominations have their
bible lessons and correspondence courses; they are ready-made "studies" which are
shrewdly constructed and written in such a manner that they lead the reader to conclusions
that fit the dogmas of the group in question.) A careful, closer study of the books
of the Bible with proper tools will help a believer to gain better and deeper biblical
understanding. In that way, one will find out more about what the Bible really says,
means and teaches. One can then, with wisdom, use that knowledge as a guide for
one's life, instead of accepting as "biblical truths" whatever commercial religion
– churches and their ministers (preachers) – have taught and want people to believe.
A more thorough, bible-based study with care and with thought will,
not only help one to learn more, but also show one how many a popular belief has
no scriptural basis or support but is altogether false and not biblical at all.
This applies, not only to prophecy and "end time" related things, but also to many
other subjects where prevailing dogmas are often taken "for granted". For this reason,
it is extremely important for believers to personally study the Writings, and to
thoroughly analyse them down to the smaller details, in order to find out the real
facts. For doing that, it is not necessary to know the Hebrew, Greek or Latin languages
(even though learning their letters and alphabet can be a good idea); there are
modern, advanced tools which can help one to study in an effective way – see the
pages
es01d.htm and
es02c.htm for more on this. The essay
eg02c.htm supplies a number of easy, elementary keys to acquiring a better and
deeper understanding of the Bible, simply by consciously and methodically avoiding
certain usual errors and pitfalls.
This site is non-denominational and non-sectarian. It is not connected
to any church, sect or religious organisation or movement. This site looks at things
from a biblical perspective, and not from a dogmatic one. It does not claim to be
without error or to "know it all" or to have a perfect or complete explanation to
all things – it consists of an ongoing bible study that has been made public, and
as the study goes on, the contents of these pages are revised and also expanded,
with new topics and themes being addressed. Readers are invited and welcome to write
to the author with thoughts and comments, or to ask questions or to point out a
mistake if they feel that they have found one. For more on this, see the page
purpose.htm.
